If you haven't heard of Shazam it's an app that listens to a small section of a song and will identify the song and tell you what it's called and who the artist is. How clever is that?!
Well iNaturalist is an app that does the same kind of thing but for nature.
Do you ever wonder what bird that is? Or whether something growing in your garden is a plant or a weed? Or whether that flying thing is a bee or a wasp or something else entirely?
iNaturalist is like a really great use of technology for the benefit of our environment. Anyone can create an account and start uploading your photos of what you see in nature. You have a good guess at what it is that you've taken a photo of and really clever people who know stuff about plants and animals use their knowledge to identify what it is. So handy. The added bonus is that when you upload a picture you are also contributing to what is called Citizen Science. Want to know more about Citizen Science, have a look here https://citizenscience.org.au/
The City of Onkaparinga is currently utilising the iNaturalist app for their own nature tracking project. It helps our local bodies to understand what species of flora and fauna are being observed - where, when, how frequently etc.
